Lilongwe - Ban Ki-Moon, the UN general secretary has said he has trusts African Union's newly elected chairman Malawi president Bingu wa Mutharika to help resolve political conflicts in the SADC region.
"I know Mutharika very well. I thought he is the right person to put to rest political conflicts in the SADC region," he told Malawi News Agency in an interview after an audience with Mutharika on the sidelines of the 14th Session of the African Union.
The reports says, Moon particularly called on the AU chair to intervene in Zimbabwe's shaky unity government and the situation in Madagascar where the elected government was overthrown and replaced by a military backed civilian.
In his acceptance speech after being elected AU chairperson, replacing acerbic Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi whose bid to extend his office tenure failed, Mutharika said political conflicts remained the biggest obstacle towards achieving development in Africa. He urged African countries to to eliminate conflicts and promote peace and security and good governance if Africa is to develop.
