Windhoek- Namibia's minister of Health and Social Services, Dr Richard Kamwi, has reiterated the government's call for the United States of America to consider lifting unconditionally the economic sanctions against Cuba.
Kamwi who was speaking at the memorial service of a Cuban doctor, Dr Elbis Franco Tamayo in Rundu last week said Cuba suffered many economical setbacks over the past two years.
"In times like this we are reminded of the supreme sacrifices made and continue to be made by the people of Cuba in support and solidarity of our country. These sacrifices are made by the government and the people of Cuba amidst the isolation and economic blockade imposed by the USA government," said Kamwi.
He commended the Cuban government for the support it rendered to Namibia over the years and now with the deployment of Cuban doctors to the different parts of the country. Kamwi used the occasion to touch on the living conditions under which the Cuban doctors reside. "In the past there have been several reports about the conditions of the Cuban medical team, including a report from her Excellency the ambassador.
His Excellency the president of the Republic of Namibia, Hifikepunye Pohamba has also directed that we ensure that the living conditions of the Cuban Medical team are up to standard," he said. He assured his ministry's commitment to improving the living conditions of the Cuban medical team.
"Whilst serving in Namibia, these doctors are under our care and we must make sure that their working environment is conducive," Kamwi said. He said the death of Tamayo will negatively affect the quality of health care in the area she served.
